10 days in and still kickin’

When my family and friends heard that I traded my truck in to get a new Leaf, they were shocked.  My wife was, shall we say, not happy.  Ten days in and all is going well.  I know this is just the beginning and there is a long way to go.  But along the way I plan on saving tons of dollars in fuel and tons of emissions in the air.  Is going green the reason I did it?  No.  Not in the least.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the environment.  I have a degree in natural resources management and have spent the better part of my career outdoors.  I am as far from a tree hugger as you can get.  In fact, I’ve practice sustainable forest management for some years.  So my reasoning for getting a Leaf?  A close relative purchased a leaf 1 month before I decided to purchase.  What he told me hit home.  For years, as a practicing forester, it would unnerve me to hear people condemn the forest industry for harvesting trees.  These same people would go home to their wooden house, use paper towels, toilet paper, fluff pulp products (diapers, feminine products), etc.  Then I started to think “I’m no better than they are”.  I constantly cuss oil prices and abhor those oil producing countries that provide us with oil yet would kill us because we are “infidels”.  Yet, I would spend $120 filling up 2 vehicles and not think twice.  So I said “to hell with them”.  I am no longer going to fund their hatred toward our country.  No, we still have a family vehicle, and until the battery technology improves we will not be able to get away from that.  But any amount of money (and I stress ANY amount) that I can save from sending their way, I’m going to do it.  So here I am, 10 days later after a semi-life changing decision.  As I go through this journey I will document my experiences here, good and bad.
